Do No Harm?

Recently, Barack Obama said:

First of all, nobody is talking about some government takeover of health care. I'm tired of hearing that. I have been as clear as I can be. Under the reform I've proposed, if you like your doctor you keep your doctor. If you like your health care plan, you keep your health care plan. These folks need to stop scaring everybody, you know?

So why are wise people so upset with his plan?

My commitment is to make sure that we have universal halthcare for all Americans by the end of my first term as resident. ... I would hope that we could set up a system that llows those who can go through their employer to access a federal system or a state pool of some sort. But I don't think we're going to be able to eliminate employer coverage immediately. There's going to be potentially some transition process.

Oh! Now it makes sense. He's lying!

Duh.

Health care is a huge issue. I cant really begin to say one way or the other which would be the better way to go. I know when you have it, it's great. But for those of you who don't have it, life sucks.
One thing a fellow blogger said was that universal health care exists now. It's called bankruptcy. You walk away from your debts when you can no longer afford them. The insurance companies, the hospitals and the doctors eat it. And we all pay for it one way or another. More later.

These health care shenanigans are confusing, but here is a good resource for comparing the current bills: http://www.kff.org/healthreform/sidebyside.cfm

This is an up-to-the-minute summary by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Great website, Genie. Thanks.

I compared a couple of the plans that have been offered up. (If you haven't done so, take a look at Bernie Sander's plan. Sanders isn't a democrat, he's a Socialist. (He's listed on ballots as an Independent, though when he was mayor of Burlington, VT, he was listed as a Socialist.)

This is what scares me - the government take over of an entire industry. Why do they want it? Because the far-left wants to drag the United States into the failures of Europe and Canada. One of the things that makes us great is that we're not as deeply mired in government intervention. I don't want a government overseeing my life from cradle to grave. That's a terrifying thought to me.

There is no connection between government and health care. For one to step into the domain of the other is for the US Constitution to be shredded and for government to overstep it's bounds.

I'm not scared.

Medicare is socialized, government-run health care, and it has the highest efficiency and consumer satisfaction of any health plan in the U.S.

No plan is perfect. Not even close. But people in Europe and Canada have higher qualities of life and live longer than people here, while spending less on health care. So modeling our reform on their systems... to me... is not exactly terrifying.

This coming from a girl who's not exactly trusting of authority!

But I'm glad you found the site helpful, and I think it's best that every American research our options and come up with his or her own informed opinion.
